Bushwalking

Some Walks To Try

Perfect weather or not, strap on your walking gear, grab a hat, some trail mix, a comfortable stick and a bottle of water. Then get on-the-front-foot and go for a bush walk. Don't let a little rain deter you as it brings out the colours and perfumes of the rainforest. Tell someone where you are going. Its a great experience and it is free. It is not a race, take your time and enjoy. For more information visit www.northernriversbushwalkersclub.org.au

Mt Warning Climb 8.4km Return

Start at the car park in the Mt Warning National Park west of Murwillumbah. Most of the walk is under a canopy in a sub tropical rainforest. The walk has many steps in the lower section. The path then lazily zigzags to a point just below the summit where there is a short section where chains are in place to assist over rocks. There are 4 viewing platforms at the top and the view is well worth the climb. There is some height exposure near the summit and the climb should be started before midday for safety reasons.

Brunswick Heads to Tyagarah Return 19km

The track starts at Brunswick Heads Surf Club and follows a trail behind the dunes to Tyagarah Nature Reserve. Here a choice can be made, either to walk south along the beach and cross Belongil Creek to Byron Bay or walk north along the beach back to Brunswick Heads. This walk can naturally be reversed to ensure the beach walk is made at low tide.

Minyon Falls Circuit Return 8km

Start walking at the Minyon Falls car park. There is a scenic lookout at the top of the Falls. The track crosses the stream and then descends down to the creek. The creek can be crossed by rock hopping providing there has not been any recent heavy rain and then the base of the falls can be reached by a short rock scramble. Return by keeping to the left bank of the creek and pick up the path to the scenic lookout. Follow the dirt road back to the car park. The walk is steep in places and rock hopping is involved. This walk should be undertaken only by experienced bushwalkers.

Cape Byron Walk Distance 3.7km

The circuit should be started at the Captain Cook Lookout. Cross Lighthouse Road and walk up Lee Lane to the top of the rise. A rainforest track starts on the right and after a climb up Tallow Ridge in littoral rainforest scattered with Burrawang palms the trail comes out on the road up to the Lighthouse. Walk along the pavement to the Lighthouse and take the path down to Australia's most easterly mainland point to Wategos Beach. At low tide detour to Little Wategos Beach and a walk around rocks to Wategos Beach. Walk along the beach to the end of Marine Parade where a path will lead to Palm Valley or The Pass. The final leg can be taken either by walking along the beach and taking the path up to Captain Cook Lookout or by taking the path to the left after crossing the car park which will ascend to the boardwalk on Lighthouse Road.
